601 Lawrence Road, Lawrence Township

On Saturday, June 18, 2005, a crew of volunteer firefighters from Lawrence Road Fire Co. attended Notre Dame High School's annual alumni day at the school's campus at 601 Lawrence Road. The special assignment ran from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Chief Wayne Hannon, Capt. Shaun Dlabik, Ff. R.J. Laird and Junior Ff. Chris Laird showed off Telesquirt 22 to everyone who attended the alumni picnic. They also operated the fire company's fire prevention trailer and gave safety lessons to the many children at the picnic.

By using a synthetic smoke that is safe to breathe but obscures visibility just like real smoke would do in a fire, the firefighters taught the children how to escape a burning home by crawling low under the smoke and how to feel a door before opening it to make sure there is no fire on the other side. Other topics addressed were the proper use of the 911 system to report emergencies and kitchen safety involving stove tops and other hot appliances.

The firefighters also posed for photos with some of the children and with Boomer, mascot of the Trenton Thunder minor league baseball team, and Rosco, mascot of The College of New Jersey.

During the afternoon, Lawrence Road firefighters assisted police and emergency medical service personnel who were dispatched to the area of Notre Dame High School on a report of an unconscious man under the small bridge that crosses the Shabakunk Creek.

Emergency personnel found the man under some shrubs near the bridge. He was not injured but appeared to be intoxicated and was cared for by the ambulance crew.
