ANIMAL RESCUE Buidling 4, White Pine Apartments,
White Pine Circle, Lawrence Township
At about 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 25, 2005, Lawrence Road Fire Co. was dispatched to the rear of Building 4 at the White Pine Apartments to assist residents who were reporting that several baby ducks were trapped in a storm sewer there.
Chief Wayne Hannon responded in Car 22, while Capt. Michael Ratcliffe, Ff. Joseph Dlabik Jr. and Ff. Joseph Dlabik Sr. responded with Rescue 22.
After assessing the situation, firefighters uses a halligan bar to dislodge the heavy metal grate covering the storm sewer. The grate was then removed from the sewer with the help of a small front end loader operated by apartment complex maintenance officials.
Ff. Joseph Dlabik Sr. initially climbed down into the hole and secured the chain used to remove the grate. After he climbed out, Hannon went down with a flashlight and tried to locate the ducks, who could be heard chirping in the draining pipe that connects the many different storm sewers in that part of the apartment complex.
Once he was able to see the ducks, Hannon had Ratcliffe and Joseph Dlabik Jr. position Rescue 22 farther along the draining line and flush water (via a 2.5-inch hoseline) into the storm sewer there.
Within minutes of the start of the water flow, the baby ducks floated along with the water downstream and out of the draining pipe into Hannon's waiting arms. All appeared to be healthy.
Four baby ducks were removed from the storm sewer and placed into the care of the apartment's maintenance officials, who in turn released them into the water of the nearby Five Mile Run creek.
