MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT WITH ENTRAPMENT Whitehead Road, near Route 1,
During the afternoon of Friday, September 9, 2005, members of Lawrence Road Fire Co. assisted at the scene of a motor vehicle accident with entrapment.
It was 2:23 p.m. when Mercer County Central Communications Center transmitted Box 21-10 for a serious traffic accident on Whitehead Road near the Route 1 Freeway overpass.
Dispatched at that time were the Slackwood (Station 21), Lawrence Road (Station 22) and Lawrenceville (Station 23) fire companies, along with EMS personnel from Lawrence First Aid Squad.
Rescue 21, Rescue 22, Utility 22, Rescue 23 and Utility 23 all responded.
Rescue 22 was commanded by Rescue Capt. Andrew Fosina, driven by Paid Driver Bryan Gibbons (transferred from Station 23 for the day to fill in in Rob Santello's absence), and crewed by Lt. Edward Kitchen and Ff. R.J. Laird.
Utility 22 was crewed by Ff. Evan Kutzin and Ff. Adam Rivera.
Firefighters arrived on location to find that a car had struck the rear of a dump truck, with the car's driver trapped in the wreckage.
While Rescue 21's crew went in service with their rescue tools to free the patient, Lawrence Road firefighters stretched a 1.75-inch hoseline from Rescue 22 and stood by for fire protection.
By 2:33 p.m., Rescue 21's crew had cut away the door, allowing EMS personnel access to the patient. The patient was removed from the car by 2:40 p.m. and transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Rescue 21 and Rescue 22 remained on the scene until 3 p.m. until the the car removed by a tow truck.
