STRUCTURE FIRE
932 Lower Ferry Road, Ewing Township

STAND-BY ASSIGNMENT
Pennington Road Fire Co. (Sta. 32), Ewing Twp.

From Thursday, February 2, through Monday, February, 6, 2006, Lawrence Road Fire Co. volunteers were very busy. A total of 14 alarms were received during that time, including four working fires, a motor vehicle extrication, and two cover assignments.

During the morning of Friday, February 3, 2006, members of Lawrence Road Fire Co. responded to a reported structure fire at the Homasote Co. in Ewing Township.

It was 11:15 a.m. when Mercer County Central Communications Center transmitted Box 33-10 for the blaze at the recycling and manufacturing plant at 932 Lower Ferry Road.

At the time, all three Ewing Township fire companies had apparatus at 13 Rockland Road overhauling an earlier house fire.

Therefore, the first units dispatched to Homasote were cover-up companies: Pennington Borough’s Engine 51 from Station 33; Lawrenceville’s Telesquirt 23 from Station 32; and Enterprise’s Engine 14-2 and Slackwood’s Snorkel 21 from Station 31.

At 11:16 a.m., Mercer County Central radioed Lawrence Road’s Rescue 22 (which was returning to Station 22 from the scene of the Rockland Road fire) and ordered Rescue 22 to take in the fire at Homasote.

Rescue 22 was commanded by Capt. Shaun Dlabik. Paid Driver Robert Santello drove and the crew included Lt. Edward Kitchen, Ff. R.J. Laird, Ff. Evan Kutzin and Ff. John Fleming.

Apparatus that responded included Engine 51; Telesquirt 23; Engine 14-2; Snorkel 21; Rescue 22; Rescue 32; Telesquirt 32; Engine 33; and Ladder Tower 33.

Telesquirt 23 arrived on scene at 11:19 a.m., followed by Engine 33, Telesquirt 32, and Engine 51 all at 11:20 a.m., then Snorkel 21, Engine 14-2, and Rescue 32 all at 11:21 a.m., then Rescue 22 at 11:24 a.m. and then Ladder Tower 33 at 11:25 a.m.

Rescue 22’s crew assembled itself as the rapid intervention team while the first-to-arrive crews entered the building. They soon found the basement to be filled with smoke from a small fire that was quickly contained to the electrical motor on a piece of machinery.

By 11:33 a.m. the fire was deemed to be under control and efforts to ventilate the smoke from the basement commenced.

(Also at 11:33 a.m. Mercer County Central dispatched all three Lawrence Township fire companies for a fire alarm activation at the Lawrence High School. Engine 21-1’s crew quickly arrived and confirmed the alarm had been set off due to a system malfunction.)

At 11:39 a.m. Rescue 22 was released from the scene of the Homasote fire and ordered to relocate to the Pennington Road firehouse to stand by there.

Rescue 22 arrived at Station 32 at 11:45 a.m. and briefly stood by there until 11:59 a.m., when all the other units went available from Homasote.

Rescue 22 finally was back in quarters at the Lawrence Road firehouse by 12:09 a.m.
