During the morning of Wednesday, June 28, 2006, Lawrence Road Fire Co. volunteers took part in the Lawrence Township Recreation Department’s “Safety Town” program on the grounds of Benjamin Franklin Elementary School at 2939 Princeton Pike.
At part of the “Safety Town” program, students entering kindergarten are taught “how to create safe situations for themselves in everyday life,” according to the recreation department.
Taking part in the special assignment were Paid Driver Robert Santello, Capt. Michael Byrd, Capt. Michael Ratcliffe, Ff. Steven Hodgdon, Ff. R.J. Laird, Ff. Mark Lenarski Jr., Ff. Adam Rivera, Junior Ff. Peter Proctor, and Junior Ff. Wayne Hannon Jr.
Firefighters reported to the school at 9 a.m. with Rescue 22, Car 22, Utility 22 and the fire company’s fire safety trailer, and remained there until about noon.
Santello taught several fire prevention classes, teaching children the importance of 911, how to crawl low under smoke to escape a fire, how to stop, drop and roll, and other important lessons. Assisted by Rivera and Hannon, Santello took children through the fire safety trailer, while Proctor modeled a firefighter’s turnout gear and breathing apparatus for the children.
The other firefighters, meanwhile, showed children Rescue 22 and demonstrated some of the equipment, such as the Holmatro rescue tools. Children were also given a chance to sit inside the crew compartment and in the driver’s seat of the apparatus.
