MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT WITH ENTRAPMENT - PHOTO GALLERY #1

Lawrence Road Fire Co. volunteers took part in a major rescue effort to free the driver of a car that crashed into a tree along Interstate 295 during the early morning hours of November 9, 2006.

According to state police, the 35-year-old man lost control of his 1999 Toyota Corolla about 3:30 a.m. while swerving to avoid debris on the southbound side of I-295 near the Route 1 exit. The car left the roadway and slammed into a large tree.

State troopers, first to arrive on the scene, found the man heavily entrapped inside the vehicle.

Alerted at 3:33 a.m., rescuers from Lawrenceville, Lawrence Road and Slackwood fire companies responded.

Rescue 22 responded at 3:37 a.m. with Assistant Chief Shaun Dlabik in command, Ff. Charles Commini Sr. driving, and a crew of Capt. Edward Kitchen, Capt. Michael Ratcliffe, Capt. Michael Byrd, Ff. Ryan Dlabik, Ff. R.J. Laird, and Ff. Ryan Dlabik.

Chief Wayne Hannon and Deputy Chief Chris Pangaldi also responded in Car 22 and Car 22-1. Rescue 22 on scene first at 3:41 a.m.

Rescue 22s crew stretched a 1.75-inch hoseline and began deploying their Holmatro tools.

Telesquirt 23 arrived at 3:45 a.m., followed by Rescue 21 at 3:46 a.m.

Firefighters cut away numerous parts of the car including the roof and doors in an effort to free the injured man. The man was so entangled in the wreckage that it took firefighters until 4:25 a.m. to extricate him.

Once freed, the man was rushed in a Lawrence Township ambulance to the trauma center at Capital Health System at Fuld hospital in Trenton, where he was admitted in fair condition.

Rescue 22 stayed on scene until 5:34 a.m. providing lights for state police investigators. Rescue 22 was back in quarters by 5:41 a.m.
